My first review will be an album I’ve been listening to quite a bit recently. Superfuzz Bigmuff by Mudhoney. What I’m listening to is the re-issue that has the early singles added on, which I’m pretty sure is the more common version as of now.
Mudhoney is for all intents and purposes the first grunge band. Now when you hear the word “grunge” you think Nirvana and maybe Pearl Jam. This is the precursor to those bands and I find it quite a bit better to listen to than the normal “grunge” bands.
Now. If you are a guitar player, you probably recognize the title of the album as a combination of 2 guitar pedals. If you know what those pedals sound like then you probably have a decent idea of what we are in for on this album.
Overall, the album is very heavy, not in the metal or brutal way, but in the fact that the rhythm section sets up a great groove for the fuzz and distorted guitars and yelp-ish vocals to pound every beat in to your brain. You won’t hear anything reminiscent of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on here, you’d be more likely to hear parallels to Black Flag’s “My War” or “Slip It In” albums (both of which are big influences on the grunge and noise rock genres). However, at the heart of all of this lies a real affinity for blues and rock and roll. Hiding under layers of fuzz and distortion lie good old fashioned rock riffs and solos that anyone can get behind.
The singer sounds like he’s trying to scream over a riot but can also croon when needed. This band does best when they are LOUD though. However, the intro to “If I Think” shows that the band can be pretty when they want to be. Most of the time, however,  that is the furthest thing from their minds.
My personal standout track is “In ‘N’ Out of Grace”

This track has a great groove to it. I love the way that the drums are mixed in here. It just sounds powerful without going too heavy on any one tone. It sets up for a sound that just sounds like a group of dudes in a room together jamming and having a great time.
This record is incredibly solid. There isn’t any track that I would call sub-par or filler. It is a great starting off point for the band and a great record to drive to or to rock out to wherever.
I’ll end my first review with this. Don’t let my bad writing keep you from this. If you are a fan of Nirvana, Jesus Lizard, Dinosaur Jr., or hardcore punk then give this band a shot. They are fantastic.
